11/16/11 - Rare 1933 Duesenberg SJ will return to its Cincinnati roots for 2012 Ault Park Concours. One of the first cars accepted to represent A Century of American Power under the category, “Classic Power – Large Displacement & Supercharged 1925 – 1948”, is a rare 1933 Duesenberg SJ. One of only 45 Duesenbergs produced with a factory-installed supercharger, this beautiful closed coach was first ordered by Powell Crosley, who resided in Cincinnati, Ohio, and made his fortune in radio and electronics during the 1920s. He took delivery July 1, 1933. Of the 45 Model SJs produced, this is one of only five which were sold with enclosed bodies. This model sports a unique, highly placed and radically embossed belt line which drops down after the windshield. It is further highlighted by a small but dramatic triangular window that is located between the windshield and A-pillar. Unlike some, the model SJ-512 has always retained its original engine and its body has not been replaced or altered.

6/15/11 - Sadly we mourn the passing of one of our long time supporters, Mr. Charles Koch. Press Release Source: The Boston Beer Company On Wednesday June 15, 2011, 2:21 pm EDT BOSTON

It is with sadness that the Board of Directors of The Boston Beer Company, Inc. (NYSE-SAM) announces the death of one of its longest serving members, Charles Joseph Koch, Jr. at the family farm in Georgetown, Ohio on June 13, 2011.

The elder Mr. Koch was a guiding light for his oldest son, Jim, in the creation of The Boston Beer Company. He contributed his immense knowledge of brewing, as well as his sound business advice. But his greatest gift lay in an old trunk stored in his attic. That trunk contained family brewing memorabilia and beer recipes dating back to the 1800's. Indeed, he handed over to his son what he considered the best of the family beer recipes. That beer was first brewed in 1984 and soon appeared in taverns and restaurants in Boston under the name Samuel Adams Boston Lager. The success of Samuel Adams Boston Lager is widely credited as a catalyst for the American Craft Beer Revolution.

Mr. Koch was born in Cincinnati on November 14, 1922. He graduated from Withrow High School and the University of Cincinnati, where he majored in chemical engineering and was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He became the fifth generation of eldest Koch sons to become a brewer. His career in brewing began in the beer industry's pre World War II time of many local small breweries and reached all the way to today's resurgent craft beer revolution. Mr. Koch apprenticed in some of Cincinnati's leading breweries of the day, including Wiedemann, Hudepohl, Burger, Bavarian and Schoenling Brewing Company. He also graduated from America's oldest brewing school, the Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1948 and served as Brewmaster at the Wooden Shoe Brewery in Minster, Ohio. In coming full circle, The Boston Beer Company bought the Hudepohl-Schoenling Brewery in Cincinnati in 1996. At the conclusion of a major renovation to the renamed Samuel Adams Brewery in 2005, one of the brewery's two, new copper brew kettles was named in honor of Charles Koch.

Mr. Koch reluctantly left the beer business when he saw that the taste for full-flavored beers was on the wane. In 1958, he co-founded Chemicals, Inc., a distribution company of brewing and industrial chemicals in Cincinnati, Ohio and retired in 1987. He served as a member of The Boston Beer Company's first Board of Advisors and then on the Board of Directors from its initial public offering in 1995 until his death. In 1945, Charles Koch married Dorothy Kautz; they were married for 63 years. They have four children: Charles James (Jim), William, Lisa Green, and Susan Koch. He leaves 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his role in the American beer business, Mr. Koch was an avid collector of automobiles, both antique and modern. Every year he was a sponsor and supporter of the Ault Park Concours d'Elegance, one of the premier classic car events in the Midwest. Funeral services for Charles Joseph Koch are private. Donations in his memory can be made to the Georgetown High School Scholarship Foundation (c/o Eric Toole, 987 Mr. Orab Heights, Georgetown, Ohio 45121) or to the Cincinnati Concours Foundation (347 Stanley Avenue, Suite One West, Cincinnati, Ohio 45226).

1/11/11 – Winners of “Jay Leno Auto Experience Dream Tour” share the exciting details of their trip. Raffle winner Jackie Sweeney, her husband Roy and their guests, Steve and Renee Locker, had a fantastic trip to the Los Angeles area for their “Jay Leno Auto Experience Dream Tour”. Their first stop was the Petersen Museum where they took a leisurely self-guided tour. The museum features many wonderful examples of custom cars and bikes, as well as vintage clothing and related memorabilia. Two displays of special interest, a skeleton style motorcycle and a collection of every Hot Wheels die cast vehicle ever made, were captured in these photos.

On October 7th, the second day of their trip, they began with a two-hour private guided tour of Jay’s garage. A member of Jay’s crew, Bob, drove them around on a golf cart to see the collection of over 100 cars and 100 motorcycles. “Bob had a story about every vehicle”. Each one is licensed and driven at least every four to six weeks. Jay comes to the garage every day to take another car. If he drives the same car two or more days, it’s a favorite.

Jay likes speed and horse power. His collection includes Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Duesenbergs, an 1100 hp Oldsmobile Toronado and even two steam cars. His most famous car is the first one he ever purchased - a 1955 Buick. Jay first traveled to California in that car and it served as his “apartment on wheels”. In the early days of his career as a struggling comic, he slept in that car in alleyways next to comedy clubs.

People often write to Jay about cars they would like to sell him. Sometimes people even want to give him a car. One man willed his 1943 Plymouth to Jay. He had purchased the car when it was new and it is still all original. The group enjoyed many stories and interesting facts such as these during their special tour of Jay’s Garage.

The VIP treatment continued that afternoon during the taping of “The Tonight Show”. Jackie, Roy, Steve and Renee were escorted to their reserved seats. Jackie remarked how interesting it was to see the “behind the scenes” work that goes into taping a live show. During the breaks, the staff would prep Jay for the next segment while the audience participated in games for prizes. Actress Katherine Heigl and singer Meatloaf were Jay’s guests. It was a perfect day catching a closer glimpse into Jay’s personal and professional life.

The final tour stop was the Nethercutt Museum. “The Nethercutt was absolutely amazing!” There were two buildings. The first floor of building one was a beautiful replica of a 1920’s car dealership complete with marble floors and columns. The second floor housed an incredible collection of music boxes and nickelodeons from Germany. The tour guide, one of the museum curators, was also a concert pianist and organist who maintained all of the musical instruments at the museum. One of the nickelodeons was so big that it was the musical equivalent of a 20-piece orchestra. The museum also owns the third largest Wurlitzer organ in the world with pipes reaching 3 stories high.

The second building held the museum’s collection of 200 plus cars. As at Jay’s Garage, each car is licensed and driven every 4 to 6 weeks. Jackie’s husband, Roy, recalled a special one of a kind Duesenberg built for the 1920’s World’s Fair. At that time, the average Duesenberg cost $4,000 to $8,000 while the average annual wage was only $400. When a man who saw the car inquired what it would cost to build the car, he was told “twenty grand”. This name stuck with the car.

Behind the second building was a completely restored locomotive engine and Pullman car from the 1920,s. It was a fantastic finish of an outstanding three-day dream tour.
